Favourite Films

When it comes down to having favourite films I suppose you could have one main favourite, but in my case I have several favourites but I think it’ll be easier to explain if I put them into categories.

Animation Films

When it comes down to animation film, I just love em. I think over the years to present of watching anime and reading manga I’ve just grown to love animation films a lot and most films with amazing special effects.

I have many favourite animation films such as Paprika, Millennium Actress, Tekkonkinkreet and Origin: Spirits of the past, pretty much like anything by Satoshi Kon. But it’s not just anime films I like I like dreamworks & Pixar films which have developed into full 3D films over the years.

But one animation which inspires me the most and (to me) brings out the best animations is Japanese Studio Ghibli. Studio Ghibli have brought out wonderful films such as Princess Mononoke, Nausicaa: Valley of the wind & Spirited Away, these animation films are brought to life with some of the most gifted and talented animators and directors and with music by Joe Hisaishi they all bring out one of the most beautiful films you’d ever see.

Asian Films

I’m very much in my Asian culture and watching Asian films is part of my favourite interests that I enjoy. Like the animation films I can’t pin-point on just one Asian film because I love so many Asian films which are emotion, full of humour and just plain experimental. One of my favourite genres is Asian horror, Asian horror is just genius. When you’re watching an Asian horror they start by building tension and making the film go at a slow pace, then they would have sudden points of which the person or people would strike and then everything would build up for a sudden or twist at the end.

Since there is so many Asian films which have been considered as classic a lot of Asian films now have been remade by American film makers. There been remakes of films such as “The Ring, Dark Waters and The Grudge”, to me the remakes aren’t as good as the originals but there are few films which have good remakes and sequels.

With a lot of samurai films they all seem to have one great feature about them, ACTION there is nothing better than a bit of good samurai action with swords and ninja everywhere. One great samurai film I enjoy is Azumi. Azumi is a great samurai film which pretty much goes round cutting people up, true may sound horrible but the stunts and story that’s behind the film is pretty well done.

Normal / Genre / Classic

With alot of the other films which ain’t Asian or animation i suppose you could call them “classics”. With classic films, there the films which you could watch over and over again and bring back memories from when you were younger. I prefer older films such as “Back to the future” or “Indiana jones” because there ain’ t that many special effects and the actors would have to do alot more stunts rather then what you get now adays.

Though there are films I which aren’t really classic, but are good in general, “Lost in Translation, 500 Days of summer and Pirates of the caribbean. These films are decent in there own way because in some ways the stories are kinder original but they have parts which people have seen before but have a suprised attached to it.

Death Note

“Weary Shinigami the Death dropped a notebook in the human world where a weary genius Light Yagami picked it up. “The human whose name is written in this note shall die” it said… It was the notebook of death that determined people’s death…”

Death note is now known all over the globe from people collecting the manga collection to watching the live action films & Anime to doing DN Cosplay at conventions.

When I first heard about Death Note back in the day, I didn’t really think much of it at first but as episodes go on, the series got better and better. The series ended at thirty seven episodes, twenty minutes each. Soon after finishing the series I started to collect the manga comics which the total ends at 12, there is 13 but the last one is an encyclopaedia about DN so I wasn’t to bothered about buying it.

The main story is basicly “Good vs Evil” and has many suprising twists and turns as the series go on, which someone would expect from a detective novel.

Soon after releasing all the manga books they then started to branch out and release in UK the other additional books which added onto the DN story.

The first “other” DN book I bought was the “Death Note: Another Note – The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases” (Middle Book), you find out clues about this story about half way through the manga books, which has characters featured the story. The LA BB Murder Cases is set before the DN manga series which features L (detective) helping the character Naomi (detective) solve a difficult case. The book is full of humour from time to time and even reveals characters which are not mentioned in the manga.

If your a fan of the DN series and want to read more, then this “prequal” book is a excellent buy and read.

L: Change the world is the sequal to the popular DN, part from releasing this story as a book they’ve also released a Live Action version of this story. I’ve not read this book yet though so can’t really comment on what the book is like yet. I saw the film along time ago and I didn’t think it was as good as the other two films “Death Note & Death Note: Last Name” but it is full of humour and has clever twists.

While I was going through my DN phase, I went and bought a DN cosplay book on ebay for £5-7 I think. Some people usually make there own Dn books then going to conventions but I one on ebay which was cheap enough. Since it’s ment to be a replica of the Dn found in the anime and movies it’s got all the rules which are featured (except one, you have to read the manga to find out, which one) and it was a good purchase when I bought it.

for anyone which is into detective novels and that like graphic novels, I would strongly recommend reading Death Note because it’s got decent characters and has many twists which will suprise you.

The girl that Leapt Through Time

“Makoto Konno is a junior in high school. She is good friends with her childhood friend, Kouske Tsuda and transfer student Chiaki Mamiya. They “pretend play” baseball after school every day.

But their relationship starts to change drastically when Makot acquires the ability to leap through time.”

With stunning character designs by Yoshiyuki  Sadamoto (Paprika, Millennium Actress) and stunning visuals by Studio Ghibli: Nizo Yamamoto together they’ve created a deep and rich piece of stunning cinema which is full of humour, adventure and a deep atmosphere of story.

The girl that leapt through time manga is a the comic version of the film which hasn’t got as much as the film but it has something which the film doesn’t have, which you’d have to find out by buying the book.

The style of the characters is still the original design by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto and he’s brought the character out in a simpler design which suites the characters attitude and really brings out her attitude.

As a result from originally buying and watching the film first, I didn’t even think there was a manga book to the film but when I went to my manga shop, I saw it and just went ahead and bought it.

To say they’ve taken a 101 min film down to a small manga book, I love the manga book just as much as I love the film and would recommend anyone to buy it if they saw it in their book store or online, it’s a real joy to read. For the people which have seen the film I would strongly recommend buying this book cause the “surprise” add on, really is a big SUPRISE.

Girl Who Leapt Though Time – Trailer

I’m not really sure what came first, the film or the manga? I originally bought and saw the film first and it took seconds before I instantly loved this film. There is so much going on in this film to start which from the visuals of the characters to all the background imagery.

In another way it’s quite a bit surreal because it has really strange effects going through the entire film from the time leaping, but then even all the effects from the slow motions to background blurs which really bring this film out.

Compared to the manga there is more to the story then the book tells and in a bit more depth but there are parts in the book which cancel out parts in the film, so both really back up each other up. I’d recommend this film to anyone who is into manga and anime and for those which like a deep story and which don’t mind a animated film now and then because though to begin with the story starts out like a funny film but does start to get quite deep and quite moving towards the end. For 101mins of decent story and visuals for an animation, I’d probably recommend it to everyone which would enjoy this type of film.

“Warm and engaging, this has its cutesy moments and crazy Van-Gogh inspired time-travel fantasy visuals but remains appealingly grounded…” Metro

“Sweet entertaining japanese animation” Daily Express

“Bittersweet, beautiful and absolutely billiant” **** SFX

“Time travel has rarely seemed so joyous” The Guardian
